The Padres announced their Opening Day roster for the 2023 season today, March 30th. The team's President of Baseball Operations & General Manager, A.J. Preller, revealed the final lineup, which included some notable changes.
The club selected outfielder David Dahl, infielder Rougned Odor and right-handed pitcher Domingo Tapia to fill out their roster. This meant that catcher Brett Sullivan was sent down to Triple-A El Paso while right-hander Michel Baez was designated for assignment.
The Padres had some injury troubles as well, with outfielder Adam Engel facing a left hamstring strain and being placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to March 27). In addition, the team also placed right-handers Joe Musgrove (left big toe fracture) and Robert Suarez (right elbow inflammation), left-handers José Castillo (left shoulder strain) and Drew Pomeranz (left elbow/flexor strain) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to March 27). Left-hander Adrian Morejon was placed on the 60-day injured list due to a left elbow sprain.
With these moves, the Padres now have a full 40-man roster. The team's Opening Day roster includes nine right-handed pitchers, four left-handers, two catchers, seven infielders, and four outfielders. Pitchers Brent Honeywell and Domingo Tapia are making their first appearance on a Major League Opening Day roster.
The Padres are all set for the 2023 season and will embark on their first match today at Petco Park against the Colorado Rockies at 6:40 pm PT. It will be interesting to see how the new roster performs and if the Padres can continue to build on their successes of past years.
