The Padres have officially announced the coaching staff for the 2023 Major League campaign. Bob Melvin will continue as manager, and his team will include returning members as well as some new faces from different organizations.
Ryan Christenson returns for his second season as associate manager, after joining the Padres in 2022 as the bench coach. Ryan Flaherty is returning for his fourth season, but this year he will be the bench coach and offensive coordinator. Ruben Niebla is entering his second season as Padres pitching coach, after spending 21 years with Cleveland’s organization. Ben Fritz steps up as the bullpen coach at the Major League level.
Matt Williams returns for his second season as the third base coach and infield coach. David Macias is coaching first base and the outfield for the second season. Oscar Bernard and Scott Coolbaugh will become assistant hitting coaches. Brian Esposito joins the Padres organization as the catching coach for his second season, and Peter Summerville returns for his fifth season as a game planning and coaching assistant after spending the previous four seasons as the bullpen catcher and coaching assistant.
Heberto Andrade is returning to the Padres for his second season as bullpen catcher and coaching assistant after spending the previous 18 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bryan Price is back for his second season as senior advisor to the Major League coaching staff after a long coaching career that spanned the past three decades. Mike Shildt returns as senior advisor to player development and Major Leagues.
According to the Padres, this team of experienced coaches has the knowledge, expertise and passion needed to develop, mentor, and ensure the success of the Padres 2023 campaign.
