The Port of San Diego has announced that they will soon be starting a project to improve Cesar Chavez Park, a popular community park in San Diego. The park is located in the Barrio Logan community along the San Diego Bay waterfront and plays host to countless activities such as picnics, sports activities, and just enjoying the scenic views.
The project will focus on the park's recreational field, which sees heavy use from the community and visitors alike. To be more specific, the project will involve replacing the turf that has worn thin in several areas. It is expected to make the field safer, more resilient, and more enjoyable for all activities.
The project will involve removing approximately 90,000 square feet of existing grass turf in the recreational field and replacing it with a new one. It will also include grading and drainage improvements and modifying the existing irrigation system that would accommodate the new turf field.
The field will be closed to the public from February 2023 through August 2023 to allow for the establishment of the new grass. However, the rest of the park, along with the public viewing pier, will remain accessible to the public during the construction period.
Marina Landscape Inc. has secured the construction contract for the project, which is expected to cost approximately $606,000.
Chairman Rafael Castellanos of the Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners expressed his pleasure at the announcement, stating that the park is a jewel in the Barrio Logan community and that he looks forward to the improvement project benefiting the community for the generations to come.
