The Padres have signed right-handed pitcher Seth Lugo to a one-year contract with a player option for the 2024 season, as announced by President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller. Lugo had an impressive 2022 season playing for the New York Mets, setting a career high in both appearances and games finished.
With an ERA of 3.60 and a 69-to-18 SO/BB ratio, Lugo managed to limit left-handed batters to only a .167 AVG. His ability to pitch well under pressure was tested during the Mets Wild Card Series against San Diego, where he appeared in all three games and allowed no runs, bringing his postseason debut to a successful start.
Lugo has played 275 games (38 starts) across seven Major League seasons with the Mets, accumulating a 3.48 ERA (191 ER, 494.2 IP) and 508 strikeouts against 137 walks. He is a valuable addition to the Padres lineup, showcasing his versatility as a starter and reliever.
Originally drafted by the Mets in the 34th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Centenary College of Louisiana, Lugo has proven himself to be a consistent and reliable pitcher. With his impressive performance in 2022, the Padres are excited to have him on board for the 2023 season.
