Comic-Con International 2015 was incredibly successful again this year, attracting more than 130,000 visitors to the streets of Downtown San Diego. However, this influx of people also meant additional work for the Downtown San Diego Partnership’s Clean & Safe team, but the team was up to the task. Covering the 24-hour period in three shifts during the Comic-Con event, they tackled as much as 23 times the normal workload to help ensure that Downtown San Diego remained at its best on behalf of the 11,000 property owners it represents.
The Clean & Safe team demonstrated outstanding performance during this year’s Comic-Con, accomplishing the following:
- Removed 22.44 tons of trash (approximately two times more than average)
- Picked up 27,149 flyers, posters, and stickers (about 23 times more than average)
- Pulled 3,980 bags of trash (about four times more than average)
“Clean & Safe works year-round to keep Downtown looking its very best, and Comic-Con is certainly no exception. Working tirelessly over the five-day period to maintain the cleanliness and safety of Downtown, Clean & Safe picked up trash, flyers, posters, and other debris among thousands of Downtown visitors, residents, and conventioneers,” said Bahija Hamraz, executive director of Clean & Safe. “I am very proud of Clean & Safe’s role in showing off our world-class Downtown during the largest and most fun event of the year.”
The scale of work undertaken during Comic-Con is in sharp contrast to a typical 5-day period when the Clean and Safe team removes only thirteen tons of trash and empties trash cans 930 times. They also remove graffiti 190 times and flyers, stickers, and posters, around 1,150 times. Additionally, the team also provides safety patrols and escorts throughout Downtown providing social outreach referrals.
The Downtown San Diego Partnership’s Clean & Safe program is a property and business improvement district that provides enhanced services for the Downtown neighborhoods including Core/Columbia, Cortez Hill, East Village, the Gaslamp Quarter, and the Marina District. The Clean & Safe crews patrol the streets 24-hours a day, seven days a week, performing maintenance duties in the public right-of-way, supplementing services provided by the City of San Diego. Safety Ambassadors also patrol the coverage area and provide social outreach referrals.
